The Gospel of John, Chapter 14

John Chapter 14

1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

An old popular belief that Christians have is that Heaven has streets upon streets with mansions lining it where all the Christians go when they die… that each one of us have our own literal mansion. The Greek word for mansion is monai it means an abiding, an abode. So it seems these verses are telling us that Jesus is going home to God’s house and making up a room for all of us who receive him to live in. He’s telling his disciples not to be troubled that when he leaves this earth he’s going to God and is preparing a place for them there. Jesus is about to be crucified and wants the disciples to be at peace and to hold on to their faith.

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

Jesus is telling his disciples that his physical body won’t be there on earth anymore, but that the Holy Spirit will be there to give them comfort. He is comforting them by reminding them that they will see him again. Look at the love of Jesus here… he knows he is about to suffer a horrible death on the cross…but instead of worrying about the pain of dying on the cross and the suffering that awaits him, he’s comforting his disciples, so they are not shaken by what he is about to suffer right before their eyes. He’s taking this time to build up their faith and give them words to hang on to while he dies on the cross to pay for the sins of mankind. What tremendous love Jesus has for us…. even while he was heading to the cross with the weight of the world on his shoulders, he was thinking only of us. No love is greater than the love of Jesus….who is blessed forever and ever…AMEN.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Judas asked Jesus how he was going to manifest himself to the disciples, but not to the world. Jesus tell him, “If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and WE will come unto him, and make our abode with him. Abode is from the Greek word monēn… meaning an abode. There are 2 occurrences of this word in the bible… one is here in verse 23 and the other is in verse 2. In verse 2, the word is talking about the place that Jesus is preparing for us in heaven…in his father’s house and here is it talking about the place we prepare for him in our hearts. When a person loves another person, really loves them with a selfless love, they will have fallen in love with this person by getting to know them and adoring and appreciating everything they stand for and do. How then can anyone claim to love Jesus if they invest no time at all getting to know him and who he is? It defies logic to me to claim to love and follow someone, but not know them and how they think, feel, react, walk, conduct themselves or what they hold as important. If a person really does love Jesus, they will give their time to him…. they will seek him and try to get understanding… they will open up a space inside themselves for Jesus to abide with them.

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

If you don’t love Jesus, you won’t give him your time, and that includes people who claim salvation, but have no room for Jesus in their life. Saying a prayer without committing to the Lord is not getting saved. When you receive Jesus, you create a space for him inside yourself… and he creates one for you in his father’s house.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Proof you have joined the family of God by receiving Jesus, the Holy Spirit will be a confirmation of your honest commitment to God and Jesus. The Lord is so good… when I first became a Christians I remember reading the word and really getting understanding… before that I thought the word was hard to understand, but after I received Jesus a change in my perspective happened because the Holy Spirit came to live inside of me and gave me a new outlook. I would read the word and God would be showing me something…. I wouldn’t stop to let it sink in… it was so good I would half grasp it and continue one like a starving baby trying to eat. The Holy Spirit logged everything and brings it all to my remembrance whenever I have a need for it. The Holy Spirit leads me into all truth… and will suddenly make things click for me…sometimes out of the blue. My spirit man is always pondering the things of God when I stay prayed up and close to my Lord. God is so good…. I love him so much.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The world can’t give you any kind of hope or promises beyond its limitations… and your afterlife is beyond the limitations of the world. God and Jesus can… because they are eternal and not of this world. Our hope is that one day we will be with the Lord in all eternity.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

Jesus took away the space for doubt and deception that would attempt to rob the disciples of their faith by telling them what was about to happen and the hope that comes from those things.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

I love you ,Jesus.
