Genesis Chapter 2

Genesis Chapter 2

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

God blessed the 7th day, this is the Sabbath day.

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

This breath of life that God breathed into man in this verse is still bringing life to mankind today.

And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

God made Adam a garden to live in.

And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.

11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.

14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

Adam is to keep the garden.

16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

God gave this commandment to Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The penalty for eating this fruit is death. People look at death as being when the body stops living, but this is not the death that God is referring too completely…. it’s part of it, but only because the actual death disobeying this rule brings is of the spirit… meaning, man is not longer eternally able to live in God’s presence. Because of this, the body of mankind is no longer renewing itself along with their spirit because the spirit has broken the eternal connection to God, God can’t be in the presence of sin and since man has now sinned they are separate from God….and so, little by little, Adams flesh is now dying from the moment he ate the fruit. God created mankind to have a choice to serve him or to reject him. Those who chose to serve God and to have fellowship with him, receive Jesus as their Savior. Once Adam took a bite of the fruit, he began dying, but he really didn’t notice in his body yet…. it was still living and breathing….so the death was not instantly apparent, but nonetheless it was very real because it was his spirit that died from being separated from God. Just like the breath of God in our nostrils give our flesh life, his presence gives our spirit life as we commune with him. Our spirits die when we lose the connection with God. Now, mankind is born without this connection because that connection was broken off when Adam sinned. Just like the breath of life that God breathed into Adam’s flesh to bring him to life that is still flowing through mankind today, the spirits’ breath of life would have still been flowing had Adam never sinned… he did, and that eternal connected flow was broken with our eternal spirit. Our sin caused a separation between us and God. When Jesus came and died for us, he paid for the sins of mankind to restore that connection to God and to make us eternal again. We are BORN AGAIN of the Spirit… his spirit. We may not feel it physically, but our spirit does.
Now mankind has to make a choice to receive Jesus and serve God, he is no longer born with the eternal connection….he has to have Jesus to get that connection now. Our sin broke this connection and Jesus paid the price for our sins to restore it, but we have to receive it…it’s a choice.

18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Adam received the commandment not to eat of the fruit before God created Eve.

19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

This is probably not how it went… but I imagine God and Jesus creating a cow or sheep…any animal really, then excitedly saying… “Let’s go see what Adam is going to name this one!”

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

God does the first surgery.

22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Our bodies are filled with nerve endings, and these nerve ending have the job of keeping us safe. An example of this is when we touch a flame, we quickly draw back our hand, so we aren’t burnt…. the way we know touching the flame is a problem is because our nerve endings send a message to our brain that our flesh is being destroyed by way of a pain signal. Unless we have a mental illness, people do not intentionally harm themselves because pain is unpleasant, and we want to foster life. In a marriage that is in line with God’s plan, we will treat our spouse like we do our own selves, with the same preservation of life. We wouldn’t subject ourselves to pain (emotional, mental, financial, spiritual etc) so we shouldn’t subject them to pain either and because we are connected to them in love, causing them pain, brings pain to ourselves. We are very compassionate regarding our spouse, when they are troubled, we are troubled. If we aren’t looking out for the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of our partner, then we aren’t walking in the way God intended us to.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Shame is the bi-product of sin.
