1 Timothy Chapter 6
1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
If we are in slavery, we are still a representative of Jesus and the Gospel message. We are to honor our masters so we don’t reflect badly on God and the doctrines of Christianity.
2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
If as a slave we find that our masters are also Christians, we are not to resent them for our position as their servant and theirs of masters, but instead we are to be a faithful servant and partaker with them in Jesus.
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
These verse come at a excellent time for me. I spent a couple of days in a dispute with 2 fellow Christians about doctrine, none of us would budge from our position. All three of us felt we were founded on the word with what we believe. We all can’t be correct though…. can we.
The first man wanted to correct me for calling God, “God” ….. he went on and on about how I must call God by his name. I’ll do a blog on the two confrontations. Anyway, I tried to explain to him that God is a righteous judge and was able to read my heart…. he knows when I say “God” I’m referring to him. The guy wouldn’t let up… and I ended the conversation with the fact that he was posturing his argument in Legalism… and we all know when we begin Legalism we are no longer in grace, but works. Because he was only giving his opinion and not considering my responses, I ended the conversation with him rather quickly because it would not have gone anywhere. He was right about the names for God, but he was wrong in mandating the use of God’s exact name to be heard by God.
The second guy was presenting his argument for the false doctrine of the pre-tribulation rapture in response to my post refuting it. Maybe it was the man’s name (Nearly the same exact name as my ex-husband) or perhaps I was just tired of typing out the same thing I had typed out a couple of times before in the same thread to other people, but I wasn’t really wanting to discuss it with him and I gave short answers that were lazy. I think he must have thought that my answers were an indication of my lack of knowledge on the subject, and instantly became condescending towards me. He even told me that he has been studying for 30 years! I didn’t bother telling him that was 10 years less than me… because it’s a dumb argument and a fallacy of logic in an appeal to authority. It doesn’t matter how long a person has been studying, what matters is that their doctrine is founded on the word of God. After he poked me over and over, I finally engaged in the conversation and refuted his entire argument with scripture like I should have from the beginning…. then ended the conversation. I ended it because he could not overcome his prideful stance and even examine what was being presented to him. The evidence of that is that he never addressed what I was pointing out with doctrine, but instead postured questions that were not biblically sound or even valuable to the argument… and even when I did answer those questions, he rejected the answer and used his rejection of my response as his footing to not even listen to my responses, which by then were mostly scripture verses that debunked his position. Continuing the conversation would not have gone anywhere, so I said my last bit and said goodbye.
Some people just enjoy debating, and some want to seem more knowledgeable than they are by posing ambiguous questions that lead nowhere and don’t edify. God’s word is YES AND AMEN…. it’s not up for debate, and it’s not complicated to understand either. So, when someone starts firing questions that are off-topic and seem designed to derail the actual message, it’s best to just cut the convo short.
Any deviation from truth needs to be address, but we have to guard against being taken down a rabbit hole to nowhere.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Paul taught contentment in whatever situation we are in… Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. He wrote this from prison, where he spent a good bit of time. There is wisdom in coming to terms with the truth that God is going to see to your needs and in every situation you find yourself in, you are there because of the providence of God. We need to be thankful always and to rest in God no matter where we are.
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
Money isn’t evil, but the things it can buy can be… and these evil things can lead a person into destruction. Money can buy snares that will trap a person… like drugs…. and, like what we see happening with Jeffrey Ebstein and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The love of money is also what’s behind the prosperity gospel. When I saw Kenneth Copeland in that interview over this jet, his face when he told the report that she better not report something she asked him about was pure evil. It truly shocked me to see it. How can a person know the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus… and act like these preachers do? Why did it take a public outcry for Joel Osteen to open his church up for those needing shelter from the storm and flooding? If we apply the 2 new commandments to these situation it reveals a lack of the Fruit of the Spirit…. they can not Love the Lord their God with all of their heart, soul mind and strength or their neighbor as themselves and act this way.
John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Loving Jesus…. is loving the sheep
So these were seduced by the riches of this world. They have strayed from the faith… and teach errors.
11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
God gives us wealth to be givers…
19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
This isn’t a earthly retirement plan…. this is a Godly one. Our eyes need to look beyond this world system and make our plans for the future world when Jesus returns and sets up his kingdom. We need to open up those savings accounts in the First Bank of God…. and lay up those treasures in heaven. Give to the poor… feed the hungry… donate to others. Be a blessing to everyone… and sometimes that isn’t a money exchange…. sometimes it’s a warm smile or a prayer you whisper to God for a person he allowed you to see that was struggling with something money can’t fix.
20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
