How I hear God

God speaks to me by bringing his word to my mind and giving me clarity. The way it often happens is that I’ll be praying about a situation and suddenly a scripture will come to mind… and I’ll be filled with understanding…. everything unfolds in my spirit… other scriptures come up that join to it and fill out the meanings. Everything fits perfectly with the Word. My path is lit up, the Holy Spirit had given me his guidance. Other times it happens to guide me when I’m studying his word or during a normal life situation where I need knowledge or wisdom.
This is not an exclusive gift given to a select few… it’s for everyone, but there is a caveat. The caveat is that you must be in the word for the Holy Spirit to open the understanding up to you. That seems like it should be a no-brainer, but there are people who believe they will get divine understanding into the Word without ever reading it in a cohesive way.

The ways to hear from God are:

  • Read the word productively. No jumping around, start on a book and read through. Jumping around the word on subject studies is great, but laying a foundation of a book to book study is vital.
  • Spend time in prayer
  • Know the difference between God speaking and your own biased mind tricking you…when God speaks it will be through his word, and it never ever contradicts what the scripture says.
  • Test any knowledge that you receive against the word. Reject completely anything that doesn’t line up.
  • Read the word with a heart to conform to obey it. It’s not some collection of stories to read and be blessed by, it’s not a motivational book of encouragement…it’s the light and the path to follow Jesus.

Ways God does NOT speak to his children:

  • letting your Bible fall open and randomly placing a finger down on a verse. (Treating the word like a fortune cookie)
  • telling you in your mind weird things like “take the expressway this morning” or “Wear your blue shirt”
  • clue collecting. This is where you think God is guiding you because of situations like, you have a desire to move to a new state, then later that day you hear a news anchor talk about jobs opening up in that same state… when you are heading home you get behind a car with license plates from that state and that evening you settle in to watch a movie you haven’t seen before only to find it was filmed in the state you want to move too. God isn’t doing that, you are. Your brain is focused on the state and so every instance it occurs becomes a clue from God. In reality, God gives you his Holy Scriptures to guide your life… if you live in your current state or move to the new one, doesn’t matter… God will bless you either way if you seek first the kingdom of heaven. Now it is wise to be prayerful and seek out God’s guidance before deciding to move, not with weird clues, but with actual information that will help you make an informed decision about whether to move or not.
  • Your feeling. Your feelings are liars… they are generated by your flesh man, so following feelings is walking in the flesh. Also, discernment does not cause you to feel things… true discernment only happens to people who have the word inside of them because it comes when the Holy Spirit brings scripture up inside your spirit to expose the truth in a situation.

God has put forth his infallible word… the bible says it will never come back void and will accomplish what it sets forth to do. Isaiah 55:11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
His word is his governance of everything…it’s the set of rules we are to live in…and God honors every last letter… every period, every dash. Those who seek him find him there…and if you want to know what is on his mind for us… it’s there. If a person can’t be bothered…it is they that regulate how much God speaks to them.
